Design and Technology
At Robinsfield, Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, the children design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Our curriculum is designed to allow wider curriculum opportunities and a balance of learning across all subjects. These opportunities provide a context for the children’s work in Design and Technology; that they learn about real life structures and the purpose of specific examples. Our curriculum includes connections across subjects including science, computing, mathematics, computing and art. Children learn how to take risks, and contribute to the creativity, culture and well-being of the community and nation.
Through a variety of creative and practical activities, we teach the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an iterative process (a series of steps which allow children to repeat, adjust/amend and improve the products they create) when designing and making. The children work in a range of relevant contexts (for example home, school, gardens and playgrounds, the local community, industry and the wider environment).
When working in Design and Technology, the children are taught four strands:
- To Design
- To Make
- To Evaluate
- To apply and understand Technical Knowledge
Along with designing, making and evaluating their own products, children have the opportunity for other experiences that enrich and stimulate their learning, such educational visits, cookery, and after school clubs, all of which give greater emphasis to links in the wider world.
